Moorland Community Speed Watch
Sadly, not all drivers drive responsibly on Dartmoor, causing many unnecessary accidents and animal deaths. To help combat this Cllr Manning with the support of Dartmoor Forest Parish Council has established a Moorland Community Speed Watch scheme in partnership with Devon and Cornwall Police. Under this scheme volunteers will be trained by the police to monitor traffic at selected locations. Speeding vehicles will be recorded and warning letters will be sent to the vehicle owner together with educational information. Persistent offenders will receive a further warning letter, and possibly a visit from their local neighbourhood policing team to deliver some words of advice. Speedwatch is not about punishment but education as it is only in this way this problem can be tackled. To volunteer, contact the Parish Clerk or Cllr Manning.
Princetown Food Hub
Welcome to our affordable food hub!
Feeding Devon LLP currently runs seven affordable food hub across four local authorities in Devon. These are located in Bovey Tracey, Tavistock, Horrabridge, Princetown and Sherford.
Membership is free and gives members access to a variety of good quality fruit and vegetables, chilled products, packaged food and bakeries. We ask for a donation of £5 per shopping bag to cover our costs. All our hubs are run by volunteers and we are fortunate to have the use of our hub venues at no charge, but we buy our food from a variety sources - including Fareshare, His Church and from supermarkets such as Aldi and Tesco. We also have vehicle, transportation and administration costs.
A £5 bag will give you, on average, a saving of at least 60%. Membership also includes access to our café which offers free coffee, tea, bakery items and often homemade soup.
When we can, we run a ‘Free table’ from which you can top up your bag at no extra cost. Any donated food is put onto the free tables which includes Warbuton’s bread and baked items.
We also offer families in receipt of ‘Healthy Start’ a bag for £4.50 which can be paid for through our new card payment service
Membership is open to anyone who needs to stretch their weekly food budget during the present financial crisis, is on a low income or is receiving means tested benefits.
We provide a standardised canvas bag to ensure that all members have access to the same amount of food. We ask for a £1 donation per bag but if you prefer not to buy one, or forget your bag, we have extra bags that you can borrow whilst you shop. All packaging is recycled and surplus food is redistributed to other community food organisations.
We provide one to three bags per household depending on the number of occupants.
